I am setting up an active creative space, open to the public, that is committed to celebrating and exploring the creative process. This installation is dependent on public participation and will show only work generated in collaboration and from conversations within that month. This fourth installment of ‘art in process’ focuses on creativity as a collective force for a better future. If we only have this moment, how do we choose to spend our time and energy? How does context influence perceived value? How do we celebrate the power of collective wellbeing and mutuality? The gallery space will be equipped for individual and collaborative art-making and creative exploration. My job is to hold space for connection with open and honest conversation and to host a safe, welcoming and vital creative space for any and everyone to enter and creatively express themselves. in process’ The Art Center was founded when I was 16 by my mother, artist/art educator Deborah Jones. As a young person, it was exceptional to have access to a community space and programming that celebrated equal access to creative expression for all ages and abilities.&nbsp; Art as process was central to all programming, the workshops and mission of the art center.. When the Art Center relocated to this permanent home in downtown Basalt, the exhibition space and educational spaces were separated with the active creative space no longer visible to passersby. In 2020, I proposed an exhibition for the gallery that aimed to interrupt the perception of the art center as primarily a commercial space. Each installment of ‘art in process’ has been unique to its time and space, being informed by whomever has walked through the door.&nbsp; Public participation has varied from simply witnessing the studio, to actively engaging in a creative process. These interactions have been unpredictable, challenging both myself as a hosting artist, and the visitors invited to earnestly engage in art-making as process—with the focus not on a final product. These installations all aimed to deepen the level of engagement and connection within our community. For each iteration of ‘art in process’, I have committed to showing up and to be present with the interactions and the ideas that arise from honest conversations that naturally occur. My intention is for these conversations to lead to new ideas, perspectives, creative exploration, and potential collaboration. I am firmly committing to showing up each day to support both individual and collaborative art-making in a safe and welcoming environment. This year’s installation focuses on what it takes for a community art center to thrive, and is a celebration of what we can achieve when people show up. As a product of the community that founded this art center, my work and this installation is in honor of my history with The Art Base, and the promise of its future The west gallery wall displays a growing grid of small square canvas pieces made by visitors. The east wall shows larger pieces, including an 8’ x 12’ printed and painted mural collage from last year’s installation of art in process. In lieu of a traditional exhibition, this unique format is a three-week artmaking experience in the main exhibition space. Katzenberger will converse and collaborate with invited guests from diverse disciplines to explore and celebrate “the inextricable connection between all things—everything is informed by everything else—using mixed media printmaking to illustrate and enhance these conversations.” Katzenberger will be onsite with her mobile printmaking equipment for a live studio presence in the Art Base Exhibition Space at 174 Midland Avenue in historic Basalt. This active artist studio is a window into the process of creating art as conversation and creative problem solving in real-time. Throughout the installation, Katzenberger will engage in conversation and collaboration with the public as well as invited guests.&nbsp; For these weeks, the sidewalk-visible gallery will become a space for a pop-up artist residency that includes the physical manifestation of a studio with materials, equipment, and ephemera, made accessible to the public. This active artist space will be documented by a Live Stream webcam of the main worktable. Works generated during this active and immersive installation will be for sale at the Closing Party on February 4th including a multiple series of limited edition prints developed through collaboration and conversation; a mural piece cataloging the interactions of visitors and participants during the residency; and an exhibition poster generated from the mural, as a memento of the experience. &nbsp;This residency-based studio will produce work that is completely unique to the location and experience of being at the Art Base and among the community. His studio is located at (SAW) Studio for Arts and Works in Carbondale, Colorado. He enjoys the art mentoring process as well as collaborating with other artists. This artwork is vibrant with color and movement with elements both representative and abstracted. The artists used wide and sweeping brush strokes to paint the background and the unifying image, Mount Sopris. They used printmaking and painterly methods to bring together images that honor key aspects of Carbondale’s history. I believe in the importance of our collective adherence and respect for the systems of law and order in our culture.&nbsp; I also hold in equal importance civil disobedience and individual expression of voice even if contrary to the rule of law. Taking the time to make the marks gives the gesture its due but also acknowledges that it takes what it takes.&nbsp; There are no shortcuts.&nbsp; This has proven true for me in life as well and so doing the art 'work' becomes as important, fulfilling and challenging as living. While this work is very personal, about my own narrative, my own aesthetics, my own life data, it also acknowledges that my story is not new.&nbsp; Other bodies have suffered pain, other hearts have been broken, other stories have not gone to plan. Sure the particulars are mine but in the broad strokes I am not alone. My pain and experiences are as unique to me as they are universal.&nbsp; They are both.&nbsp; This contradiction, and existence of two seemingly inconsistent truths is a theme that has long been with me.&nbsp; I am both old and young, full of potential and failure. It relates to the intersection of art and science which has always been a fruitful place for me. Their relationship to each other and informing of one another is what I find most interesting.&nbsp; I feel great joy in finding the extraordinary in the common or overlooked thing. And great satisfaction when two disparate things become entangled and thus inform, enhance and offer a home to each other (data/narrative, entropy/order, subject/object, me/you, artist/art).
